Black History Month Day 28th February 09

// February 2nd, 2009 //

Saturday 28th of February was a day all about African Heritage organized in cooperation by the Trenchtown Reading Centre and the Rose Town Library. Poet Marc who is taking social work courses at UWI gave a presentation of his work and compensated for Amina Blackwood, who couldn’t come and give a lecture as supposed, due to health problems. After that, Roslyn Ellison, founder of TRC, showed some original African designs and presented some symbols to the Kids, who were all excited to soon design and paint their own T-Shirt. African patterns, Jamaican Flags, Rasta-Heads, Names and Symbols soon emblazed in all colours. The kids enjoyed the creative workshop and were satisfied with their new shirts! Even Natty King came passing through with his family and admired their new T-Shirts! After the painting the whole group, about 40 kids participated in the event, went over to the Bob Marley Culture Yard see a presentation of the Kingston Drummers, a professional drum combo. They impressed the kids and some of them got the chance to get drum instructions and could exercise to beat the drums themselves. The whole group went over to the Rose Town Library in the next community and kids from both groups gave an impressive exposure of their drama skills and presented various poems and songs. The day was concluded with a treat and all kids got their patty, their ice-cream, an orange and a drink! In the yard many enjoyed showing off their artworks and model for some photo-shots… We of “HELP Jamaica” led a group of kids through the day and of course we took many pictures and even a some video takes. So look out for new pics at the photo galleries on our website and our myspace and facebook pages! Share the Joy!
